Using the FitSense FS-1 with CrossTrak
NLI Software Setup
Download and install the latest "CrossTrak-compatible" version of the
FitSense NLI software from the
FitSense website. If you have an older version of the NLI software
installed, you must CLOSE your existing NLI program
before installing the upgrade! The blue FitSense icon will appear in your
System Tray in the lower right corner of your screen when the NLI program is
running.
Ensure that Enable CrossTrak and Save CSV File are selected
in the NLI Setup screen and that the specified Directories to the
CrossTrak program and the saved CSV files are correct.
If you wish to upload the same data to CrossTrak and the FitSense website
simultaneously, check Save to Web in the NLI Setup screen.
Likely path to the CrossTrak program:
c:\Program Files\H&M Riley Consulting, Ltd\CrossTrak
Suggested location of CSV Files (Do not
specify the root directory -- c:\):
c:\Program Files\FitSense\Data

Uploading Watch Data to CrossTrak
With the NetLink pod plugged into the serial port on your PC and the NLI
software running, enabled and properly setup for use with CrossTrak, enter the COMM mode on the watch. The light
on the Netlink pod should blink then turn steady blue and the NLI program
should display a series of messages like: "Watch Found", "Getting User
Props", "Gathering Diary Info", "Gathering Split Data" and "Gathering Chart
Data".
If CrossTrak is not currently running, the program
will launch after a few seconds and a window will appear with a list of workouts saved on the
watch. CD will appear next to a workout that includes "Chart Data"
(i.e. heart rate or speed/distance samples). Select the file(s) you wish to
import and click Import (use the Ctrl / Shift keys to select multiple
files).
All selected workouts will be added to the CrossTrak program as "New
Runs". If
CrossTrak is not running prior to the upload, the workout(s) will be added
to the Daily Diary of the Default Athlete. If CrossTrak is already
running, the workout(s) will be added to the Daily Diary of the currently
displayed athlete in
CrossTrak. Add
additional information to the Workout Window for each imported workout as
necessary and click OK.
You can upload the same data to CrossTrak and the FitSense web log simultaneously by also checking Save to Web in the NLI Setup screen.
Notes for CrossTrak v2.6.0 to v2.8.0
- It is not possible to import multiple workouts from the FitSense watch to
CrossTrak. If your watch has a stored workout with "Chart Data" attached, that
workout will be automatically uploaded into CrossTrak as a "New Run".

Importing Saved FitSense Data
from Files
To import previously uploaded FitSense workouts into CrossTrak, select
FitSense on the Heart Rate Monitor tab of CrossTrak's Setup
screen and enter the correct path to your saved FitSense .csv files.

Click
Import, Run on CrossTrak's main interface to add saved FitSense data to a "New Run". To add
the saved data to an existing workout, right-click on the workout and
select Attach/Override HRM/Session Data.
In version 2.9+, a small window will appear with a list of workouts saved in
the .csv file. CD will appear next to a workout that includes "Chart
Data" (i.e. heart rate or speed/distance samples). Select the workout(s) you wish to
import and click Import (use the Ctrl / Shift keys to select multiple
files). All selected workouts will be added to the CrossTrak program as "New
Runs" for the currently displayed athlete.
Currently, you can only import data from one .csv file at a time. We are
working on an import tool that will allow users to import ALL data at once
from their FitSense web log into CrossTrak. Stay tuned...
Notes:
1. The .csv file will not import if it is already open in Excel
or if it has been modified using Excel!
2. Please see the explanation
here if you intend to open .csv files in Excel.

Troubleshooting
Note: Version 2.9+ includes minor bug
fixes for the FitSense upload/import features.
Problem: Unable to Upload Data to CrossTrak Using NetLink
- Make sure that you are using the most recent version of the CrossTrak
program (Online Features > Check for Newer Version).
- Check that the NetLink pod is plugged into the serial port on your PC
and that the port is not being used by any other device (i.e. Palm Pilot).
- The NLI software must be running and "Enabled" (the blue FitSense icon
should appear in your System Tray in the lower right corner of your
screen). Enable CrossTrak and Save CSV File must be selected and the correct
file
directories must be specified in the NLI Setup screen.
- Right-click on the FitSense NLI icon to choose a different serial port,
enable the NLI software, alter the settings or test the serial port
connection. If the NLI software is not running, go to: Start > Programs >
FitSense > NLI
- Try clearing the LOG on the watch (consult the watch manual for how
to do this).
- If you still can't upload data to CrossTrak, try checking Save to
Web in the NLI Setup screen. If the watch also fails to upload data to
the FitSense Web log, please consult the
FitSense website for further technical support. If you are able to
upload data to the FitSense web log, but not to CrossTrak, please
contact us
after checking everything listed on this page.
Problem: Some Data is Missing After Uploading to CrossTrak
Check Save to Web in the NLI Setup screen and see if the same
thing happens when uploading data to the FitSense web log. If so, please
consult the
FitSense website for further technical support.
Problem: Only One Workout Includes Chart Data
The FitSense FS-1 only stores chart data (i.e. heart rate or
speed/distance samples) for one workout at a time. Summary data for several
workouts may be stored on the watch and imported into CrossTrak, but only
one workout in the group will include chart data. This workout will have
CD next to it in the small import window.
You must CLR CHRT on the FitSense watch before starting the
chronograph in order for the watch to store chart data for that workout
(consult the watch manual for more on this).
Problem: Unable to Import FitSense Data into CrossTrak from Saved .csv Files
Make sure that you are using the most recent version of the CrossTrak
program (Online Features > Check for Newer Version).
Check that FitSense is selected on the Heart Rate Monitor tab of
CrossTrak's Setup screen and that the correct path to the FitSense .csv
files is entered in the space provided.
Likely path: c:\Program Files\FitSense\Data
Sample data file name: R020823_1015.csv
Error Message: "A problem occurred while importing HRM file!"
Make sure that you are using the most recent version of the CrossTrak
program (Online Features > Check for Newer Version).
If the error occurs while attempting to import workouts from a saved .csv
file, and you have previously opened the .csv file in Excel, please see the
important notes
below.
Notes for CrossTrak v2.6.0 to v2.8.0
- If you receive this message while attempting to import workouts from a
saved .csv file, it is possible that the .csv file does not include "Chart
Data" (i.e. samples for heart rate or speed/distance) or that the Chart Data
in the .csv file is not associated with the most recent workout. To confirm,
open the .csv file in spreadsheet format and check to see if chart data is
present and associated with the most recent workout. Or simply upgrade to
the latest version of CrossTrak.

Important Notes About .csv Files
Opening FitSense .csv Files in Excel
The NLI .csv output data file is not a true comma-delimited file. If the
.csv file is opened in Excel, any changes to the file (even something as
simple as a column resizing) may cause Excel to modify and update the .csv
file. Changes that may occur include:
- Dates, times and numbers converted to the same format as those used by
your system's regional settings.
- Single Line Feeds converted to Line Feed and Carriage Return.
- Extra commas appended to certain lines.
The modified .csv file may not be compatible with CrossTrak and an
error may occur when attempting to import the file.
How to Fix "modified" .csv Files
If you have a .csv file that was opened in Excel and will not import into
CrossTrak, please try the following:
- Make sure all applications are closed.
- Change your system's regional settings (Start > Settings > Control
Panel > Regional Options) to use the following formats:
Date = MM/dd/YYYY
Time = hh:mm:ss
- Using Excel, open the .csv files that don't import, make a column
width change, save the files and exit Excel.
- Go back and restore your original regional settings.
- Import the "fixed" .csv file into CrossTrak.
